Are you someone who likes to geek out about certain things? Do you have a hobby that you’ve gotten kind of good at? Would you be willing to share your skills and knowledge in a relaxed, informal setting among friends and come away with a little money in your pocket?
If so, this Open Call is for you! And maybe it’s for someone else you know too.
The sky is the limit for these Skill Share events at the Yew Mountain Center. Nothing is too trivial or grandiose to bring to the table. Maybe you know how to make all-natural insect repellant, or traditional perogies? Maybe you can show people how to sew a beautiful table runner, weave something with natural fibers, or share everything you know about symbolism in Margaret Atwood novels? Want to do a yoga class? Zumba? Skill Shares are a good way to practice presenting and teaching things you love.
We can arrange to have a projector, screen, basic kitchen supplies… Need other things? Maybe we have them… You could use the dining room, great room, or any of the outdoor spaces to do your thing.
This is how it works: 1. Pick a topic. 2. Fill out our very simple application (below), agree to the terms, and sign. 3. Choose 3 dates and times you could present Sept-Nov. (to help with scheduling—we’ll plan to do it only once at first.) Weekdays or weekends could work. 4. Set a price for admission. I suggest keeping it in the $5-10 range, but do what feels right to you. (But not free—we do have to balance our budget and remember, your time and expertise is valuable!) Twenty percent will go to keeping the Yew Mountain Center afloat. The rest goes in your pocket. 5. Set a materials fee if needed. We don’t take a percentage of that. Make and take things would be awesome! 6. We will advertise the events via email, Facebook, Instagram… and ask that you also help us promote them through your networks. Thanks for helping us try this out! We are excited to learn about people’s hidden talents in this community and watch us all grow smarter. Please share with someone you think might be interested. This is an Open Call!
