Winter Trees Walk 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM Saturday Break through your winter dormancy to learn about identifying features of winter trees. This is a family-friendly, easy walk through the forest. Learn Winter Tree Identification from Ken Beezley and Maple Tapping from Will Lewis. Tree Grafting Workshop DIY Fruit Tree Grafting Experience 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Friday $25 Registration Get ready to learn the timeless skill of tree grafting with our Fruit Tree Grafting Workshop! Discover the whip and tongue grafting technique and create your own grafted fruit trees in this hands-on class. Guided by knowledgeable instructors, you’ll work with apple trees and take home five grafted dwarf trees to start or expand your own orchard. Grab-n-Go refreshments will be available. Please feel free to bring your own snacks or bring something to share. This is a family-friendly event. Sharp knives will be in use. Please leave your pets at home. Spaces are limited. Wild Edibles Walk 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM Friday Suggested walk donation $15. We appreciate every gift, regardless of its size. Join us for an easy walk and informative session that teaches safe, responsible, and sustainable ways to gather nourishment from the wild. Please leave your pets at home. Stay the weekend with us to explore even more of the YMC events, with the Forest Farming Field Day happening the next day. Rooms and campsites are available for an additional cost.

Forest Farming Field Day Multiple Workshops & Presenters 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM Saturday The 2026 WV Forest Farming Field Day will address a variety of forest farming topics, including opportunities for generating agricultural income while conserving and rejuvenating forested land through the cultivation of medicinal herbs, mushrooms, and maple syrup. Tour the Yew Mountain Center's forest farm and learn about mini-grants and technical assistance available to get you started or to expand a forest farm. This is a family-friendly event. Please leave your pets at home. Spaces are limited. Registration is required. June 2026

Mountain Medicine Weekend Multiple Workshops & Presenters Friday, Saturday & Sunday Explore traditional and modern uses of the wild plants and fungi of our region. Participate in the sustainable harvest and preparation of tinctures, teas, and/or salves. Learn how forest farming contributes to the protection of these native Appalachian resources from the small producers and businesses bringing local forest resources to our region. This is a family-friendly event. Please leave your pets at home. Rooms and campsites are available for an additional cost.

Mushroom Weekend Friday, Saturday & Sunday Join us for a variety of events with a fun fungal focus! The mushroom foray will be Saturday. This is the ultimate hands-on, multi-sensory, arts-infused learning adventure. Whether you're a seasoned forager or a curious newcomer, this event offers something for everyone. Native Seed Collection Walk 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM Saturday Fall is starting to touch the forest, and the prized botanicals have put in most of their work for the year. It's time to give them a helping hand to ensure success for their next generation. Join us for a moderate walk to our best botanical habitat to collect ramp and other valued seeds as we expand our forest farm. You may take some home to start a forest garden as well.

Fall Planting Workshop 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM Saturday Learn the basics of root division and seeding in the fall to propagate plants such as goldenseal, ginseng, ramps, and black cohosh. Increase the value of forested land while rejuvenating the woodland ecosystem by forest farming! Led by horticulturist Will Lewis, West Virginia Forest Farming Coordinator. We will have limited plant material available if you would like to take some to start or enhance your forest farm. This is a family-friendly event. Please leave your pets at home. Friendsgiving Potluck & Open House 2-5 PM Sunday Visit the Yew for the first time or the 50th time at our Friendsgiving Potluck and Open House. Enjoy a roasted turkey donated by Donald Blake of Terrapin Farm and dishes contributed by all who wish to bring food to share. We'll dig in around 3 PM. Will Lewis and Adrienne Cedarleaf will each offer 45-minute tours of the land at 2:15 PM and 4:00 PM. Got some tired little pumpkins and bad apples? Bring them to the produce launcher and teach them to fly. We'll have our annual pond plunge with the 6-person sauna available before and after this chilling activity. Music makers are invited and encouraged to do their thing! We'll have a campfire outside, weather permitting, and one in the stone fireplace in the Great Room. This is a family-friendly event! Parents are responsible for supervising their children at all times. This isn't a pet-friendly event, however. Please leave your fur family at home. This is a free community offering! It is also the first event at the Yew since our launch of the "We Need Yew" comprehensive fundraising campaign. We are raising money to buy the land and continue serving the community with beloved programs and new opportunities. Local ownership of the Yew is possible with local support! Do you know someone who would love to protect this resource for generations to come? Please extend our invitation to visit! December 2025

Native American Forest Stewardship with Dr. Allen Bryant Professor at Appalachian State University, Cherokee Native 12-4 PM Saturday Indigenous Voices series It's a great time to be in the forest! Join us for Dr. Allen Bryant's presentation and learn how to plant forest botanicals for successful future harvests with Will Lewis. Join friends to help us expand the forest farm at the Yew. Family-friendly. 12 PM - Bring a bag lunch or purchase some tasty soup on site 1 PM - Dr. Bryant presents "Returning to Kituwah: History, Homeland, and Cultural Renewal" (indoors) 2 PM - Forest Medicinal Planting Workshop (in the forest) Please leave pets at home. Suggested donation: $10. Due to the recent snowfall and an ice storm in Boone, NC, Dr. Allen Bryant
is unable to travel to the workshop, but he looks forward to joining us next year for his presentation. The Forest Medicinal Planting Workshop will still be taking place. |
